A garden on a barrier island presents some challenges and but being friendly to nature can present some great rewards too. Native beauty and “doing the right thing” can be part of a garden that reflects your personality. You will learn how and be given some great online material to help.

About the Presenters:
Karen Walzer is the Public Outreach Coordinator for the Barnegat Bay Partnership, a National Estuary Program working to protect and restore clean water and healthy habitat in the Barnegat Bay ecosystem. Karen coordinates the communication initiatives and educational programs for the Partnership. She helped create and now manages the content for the Jersey-Friendly Yards website (JerseyYards.org), an easy-to-use online guide to environmentally friendly landscaping in New Jersey. Karen has a B.S. degree in Biology from Bucknell University and is a licensed NJ Registered Environmental Health Specialist. She is also a Master Gardener and co-leader of the Jersey Shore chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey.
Emily McGuckin is the current New Jersey Watershed Ambassador for the Barnegat Bay, hosted with the Barnegat Bay Partnership. She educates communities within the Barnegat Bay Watershed on why the watersheds are important, how to keep them healthy and how to protect them. She also assesses the health of streams in the Barnegat Bay Watershed, as well as organizing clean ups, tree plantings, and rain barrel workshops for groups in Ocean County. Emily graduated from Stockton University with a degree in Marine Science and a minor in Environmental Science. She has worked for many marine and environmental groups in Monmouth and Ocean counties, including the American Littoral Society and the Monmouth County Parks System. She is extremely excited to be working to keep the Barnegat Bay Watershed healthy and beautiful.
