Speaker: Dr. Douglas Zemeckis

Offshore wind energy is being developed off New Jersey given the anticipated environmental, economic, and energy system benefits. This talk will provide an overview of the development of offshore wind energy off our coast and the challenges associated with sharing the coastal ocean among the many different users. For example, many other industries use the coastal ocean, such as shipping and both commercial and recreational fishing, and different areas serve as critical habitats for finfish, shellfish, marine mammals, and other species. As a result, the coastal ocean can be a rather crowded place which presents numerous challenges associated with developing offshore wind energy while considering other users of this space.

Dr. Douglas Zemeckis serves as a County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor) with Rutgers Cooperative Extension. In this role, he conducts educational programming and applied research on issues related to fisheries, aquaculture, and coastal marine resource management focusing on Ocean, Atlantic, and Monmouth counties.
