8th Annual Plein Air Plus Exhibition
Plein Air Plus "Island Life" Exhibition: September 16th - October 29th, 2023

Long Beach Island has a vibrant artist community and is a vacation destination which draws its audience of collectors, supporters of the arts and artists from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, DC and beyond. The LBIF, founded in 1948, is celebrating its 75th year in 2023. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the eighth Plein Air Plus Competition and Exhibition on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
We welcome artists to apply to a unique Plein Air Event. Our Paint Out is over a two-month period, allowing artists to visit and paint the scenic, seashore environment of Long Beach Island (LBI) New Jersey on their own schedule, any time between July 1st through August 31st, 2023. Artists can choose the time of day, weather, and varied locations to paint.

AWARDS:
First Prize: $500. to classical “Plein Air” and First Prize: $500. to “Plein Air Plus +”,
2nd Prize $250. and Third Prize $100. in either category – Classical or Plus.
Three Honorable Mentions.
Juror, Kiki Aebi (MoMA), will pick approximately 40 artists to participate in the Paint Out on Long Beach Island during July and August. The accepted artists will exhibit the paintings created in the LBI Paint Out in the "Island Life" exhibition scheduled for September through October. Prizes will be awarded at the reception. (Artists are not required to attend the reception).
ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18 years and older in the continental US.

Artists must submit 3 images of their previous work painted in the past two years for consideration. Painting media can include oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel.
Accepted artists names will be posted on LBIF site: June 1

Water Stories
Water Stories invites artists to enter a state-wide juried call at the LBIF. Artists who live in New Jersey can submit work for consideration for this exhibition.

JUROR: Dr. Tricia Bloom, Senior Curator of American Art, the Newark Museum of Art, New Jersey.
Through the lens of artists living and working in the state of New Jersey, Water Stories will showcase compelling work thematically derived from water, a very important topic for this century, for New Jersey, and for inhabitants living on the coast and near bodies of water.
Submissions can include 2D work that can be wall hung in LBIF’s gallery and/or 3D work to be displayed outdoors on the Foundation’s grounds. Mediums can include drawing painting, hand-pulled prints, photography, mixed media, wall hung materials in the crafts, digitally created work, and video.
Three-dimensional work can be submitted for consideration to be shown outdoors on our nature trail (subject to the elements) for the duration of the exhibition. Unconventional mediums are welcome, as long as they contain no hazardous flammable or toxic materials. The outdoor space is unsecured. Artwork installed outdoors will not be insured by the LBIF.

The Juror for this exhibition Dr. Tricia L Bloom, Senior Curator of American Art, the Newark Museum of Art, New Jersey. TRICIA LAUGHLIN BLOOM is Senior Curator of American Art at The Newark Museum of Art. A specialist in modern and contemporary art, Bloom has initiated exhibitions and publications that foster global perspectives and expand the way the Museum defines American art. Bloom has worked with contemporary artists on acquisitions, exhibitions, and site-specific commissions, while also leading the reinterpretation of NMOA’s American collection galleries, Seeing America: 20th & 21st Century, and Seeing America: 18th & 19th Century. She holds a PhD from Rutgers University and a MA from SUNY Stony Brook.
WORKS ON PAPER
The 25th Annual National Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Works on Paper can include but is not limited to Drawing, Painting on Paper, hand pulled Prints, Photographic Prints, Digital Works on Paper, and Paper constructions that can be wall hung.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
The 25th annual exhibition, Works on Paper 2023 at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences welcomes entries of original work, created within the last two years, which explore the varied media which utilize Paper. The Competition and Exhibition is open to artists in continental USA only. Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photographic prints, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, and paper constructions which may be wall hung. Three cash Prizes and three Honorable Mentions will be awarded by the Juror, TBA, at the reception. Artists do not have to be present to receive their awards. The competition and exhibition are open to emerging as well as established artists working in the continental US.
An exhibition catalog is planned, pending funding.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Artists 18 years and older, residing in the continental USA, are eligible.
Works on Paper can include, but are not limited to drawing, painting on paper, hand-pulled prints, photography, digitally created artwork displayed as prints, photographic prints, and paper construction that are wall hung. Entries must have been created within the last two years and not been previously shown at LBIF.
Two-dimensional works should not exceed 60 inches in width and 60 inches in height, and not exceed 10 lbs. Work may not project in the third dimension beyond 18 inches. However, larger size work is encouraged and allowed. The artist must provide return prepaid postage or pre-paid return shipping label for work and sturdy, reusable packaging. Please do not submit work that has a retail value over $7,500.
The work submitted must be available for the duration of the exhibition. ALL WORKS MUST BE FOR SALE. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will retain a 40% commission of the purchase price on all works sold during the exhibition. If any artwork is commissioned from this exhibition, the LBIF will retain 40% of the commissioned price.
Work submitted must be suitably framed, firmly wired, prepared and ready for hanging, and professionally presented. Large work is encouraged. No saw-tooth hangers; no sandwich frames. We recommend that all work on paper must be displayed framed and protected under acrylic (Plexiglas). No frames with glass allowed. 3-D work will be considered, but should be wall mounted, or able to be displayed on a 10” deep wall mounted shelf. Please do not submit three-dimensional works in the round that require pedestals. Frames must be white, black or natural wood.
Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude from the exhibition any works that do not arrive in sturdy condition, ready to hang, or are deemed too fragile to be successfully exhibited. Work that has not been suitably prepared will be hung at LBIF's discretion.
Please only submit work that will be available at the time of the exhibition and will remain for its entirety. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition. No pricing changes will be allowed after acceptance. Work that is copied or done under the guidance of an instructor is not eligible. Entries must not have been previously exhibited at LBIF. If the work does not fully reflect what is represented in the submitted images, Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences reserves the right to exclude it from the exhibition.

About the Juror Marilyn Symmes is a New York City-based art curator with expertise in prints, drawings, and photographs. After starting her career at the Smith College Museum of Art, followed by the Detroit Institute of Arts, she was the curator in charge of graphic arts collections at the Toledo Museum of Art, the Cooper Hewitt/Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. At those museums, she has organized almost a hundred exhibitions over the decades, and managed museum collections with works of art on paper from the Renaissance to contemporary American art. She also has also been a grant reviewer for the Association of Print Scholars organization, as well as for the National Endowment for the Humanities Indemnity advisory panel. Currently, as a consultant curator, she works for the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, in addition to serving as a research cataloguer in the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Unmasked Juried Exhibition
This exhibition invites artists draw from underneath the surface in order to reveal a deeper vision of portraiture. Self or otherwise, the artist will intend to use presence of another person or object as an extension of traditional portraiture. Artwork selected can include but is not limited to drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, digitally created work, and 3D constructions that can be wall hung. Artwork that was created as a multiple through printmaking processes or photography will NOT be considered for this exhibition.
Juror: Jessica T. Smith, The Philadelphia Museum of Art
Dr. Jessica Todd Smith is the Susan Gray Detweiler Curator of American Art and Manager of the Center for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Recent projects include the exhibitions Painting Identity; Elegy: Lament in the 20th Century; and Modern Times: American Art 1910-1950, which was accompanied by the book American Modernism: Highlights from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Prior to her arrival at the PMA in 2016, she was the Virginia Steele Scott Chief Curator of American Art at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. At The Huntington, Smith worked on three major expansions of the American galleries, in addition to exhibitions, publications, and collection development. She earned a B.A. summa cum laude from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Yale University.
Foundation Arts Festival
We invite you to participate in The Foundation Art Festival (FAF 2022), a juried Makers retail show curated by our Arts & Exhibition Committee. We look for unique art and craft artists and their work who promote the mission of the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences of bringing high quality art, craft and design to the buying public.
We are looking for artists who create handmade, original work. Seasoned or new artisans that create unique, high quality handmade products are encouraged to apply. However, we are open to products that are designed by the artist & produced in small quantities within the continental U.S. All mediums are welcome.
The Foundation Art Festival is one of the biggest events on Long Beach Island, a vibrant arts community with patrons, collectors and visitors from across the country. As a beautiful summer resort community, the LBIF draws visitors from the New York, North Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore & the Washington, DC areas and beyond.
The LBIF's mission, celebrating its 73rd Anniversary, has always been to provide excellence in the art's, performance, music, science and educational programing for the community. Our goal is to unite Artists who inspire, educate, create with Buyers looking for objects that enhance their lives. Those who live on or those who visit the coast of New Jersey take home unique pieces, created by the artists who are part of our Festival.
Elemental Effects Juried Exhibition
Elemental Effects: Water, Wind, Earth & Fire invites artists to enter the National Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences, Long Beach Island, New Jersey. This venturous exhibition pays tribute to the diverse effects of water, wind, earth, and fire during the art making process. Artworks that manifest intersections of art with science and design are encouraged. Submissions can include 2D work that can be wall hung and/or 3D work to be displayed on the Foundation’s grounds.
Juror: Linda Weintraub
Linda Weintraub practices eco art as an author, educator, curator, practitioner, and homesteader. Throughout her career she has championed the outposts of vanguard experimentation in the arts as they have evolved over the decades. Weintraub has curated over fifty exhibitions. She is the author of innumerable essays and several books exploring contemporary art and ecology. They include WHAT’s NEXT? Eco Materialism & Contemporary Art (2018), To LIFE! Eco Art in Pursuit of a Sustainable Planet” (2012), and Avant-Guardians (2007), a series of textlets titled EcoCentric Topics: Pioneering Themes for Eco-Art; Cycle-Logical Art: Recycling Matters for Eco-Art; EnvironMentalities: Twenty-two Approaches to Eco-Art. Additionally, she is the author of such popular books as Art on the Edge & Over, and In the Making: Creative Options for Contemporary Art.

Juror: Esther Adler, Curator, MOMA, Museum of Modern Art, NYC
Esther Adler is Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Museum of Modern Art. Her exhibition Joseph E. Yoakum: What I Saw is on view at MoMA through March 19, 2022, and will travel to The Menil Collection in April, having opened at the Art Institute of Chicago on June 12, 2021. Most recently, she organized Betye Saar: The Legends of Black Girl’s Window (with Christophe Cherix, 2019), Charles White: A Retrospective (with Sarah Kelly Oehler, 2018) and Charles White—Leonardo da Vinci. Curated by David Hammons (2017).
Ms. Adler joined the museum staff in 2005, and worked as a Research Assistant, Curatorial Assistant, and Assistant Curator in the former Drawings Department. She has also worked at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden as a graduate fellow, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has a BA from Brandeis University, and an MA from the University of Maryland.
