OUR FACILITIES

The LBIF is a year-round organization that hosts everything from interactive exhibitions to hands-on educational programs in the arts and sciences. We’re more than happy to show you around the LBIF facilities if you’d like to stop by, but below, you’ll be able to explore our various classrooms and studio spaces to get a sense of the LBIF’s many offerings. These pages are always a work in progress, so please check back frequently for all kinds of exciting updates.

TAKE A TOUR

  • Built in 1948, the Main Gallery was the first structure completed on the LBIF site. Reminiscent of an airplane hangar, slatted ceiling and exposed steel trusses, which pay homage to its mid-century modern design, give the space exceptional character .
The LBIF Gallery is approximately 3500 square feet and hosts free exhibitions year-round to enable arts education, introduce new media, and stimulate the mind and senses. Exhibits range from internationally known artists working in a wide range of media to community-based shows highlighting the work of the talented local community and its artists. Many exhibitions include artworks for sale that can be purchased through the main office.
A year-round craft gallery graces one wall of the space and offers works on consignment from resident, local, and national artisans.
The Main Gallery (and related spaces) are available for rental for small and large receptions and events. Seated for a formal dinner, the Main Gallery can fit 150. Standing, its occupancy is 432, and for seated programs (such as films) occupancy is 308.

  • Home to our summer Nature Studies and Marine Science camps, as well as our collection of interesting bay-related items, this space is actually a former house that was resituated on the LBIF’s property. The marshlands- and bay-facing deck off the building serves as the space for our Saturday/Sunday weekend yoga May-September.

  • The LBIF Print Room is home to our summer Teen Arts program, professional development classes in printmaking, and a library of artist reference materials donated by Mark Carlson in honor of his late wife, Susan M. Carlson.

  • This space is a smaller gallery room off the main gallery. A special rolling shade closes a window between the gallery space and the food studio kitchen next door. It is often used for classes, presentations, lectures, small film screenings, catering, and concessions.

  • The LBIF Ceramics Studio contains 20 electric wheels for throwing and six large handbuilding locations. The studio is active year-round and hosts two seasonal residency programs.
Throughout the year, the LBIF invites professional ceramicists to the Studio to give workshops in a wide variety of techniques and disciplines. Past instructors have included Christa Assad, John Britt, Ramon Camarillo, Ayumi Horie, Jack Troy, and many more.
The Studio boasts a massive gas kiln, a raku kiln, and a salt/soda/wood kiln.
Work by resident ceramicists is available for sale in the Studio as well as in the main craft gallery.

  • This lovely space sits on the back of the main building. The room offers big windows and beautiful views across our 26 acres of protected wetlands. It’s the perfect spot for figure drawing on summer Fridays, for our Friday night Cocktail’s and Canvas sessions, and for smaller life event showers or birthday parties. The attached deck is used for yoga Mon-Fri mornings all summer, and has served as the setting for lovely sunset-viewing cocktails at many receptions and events.
