Printing with Rust with Maria Maurio

Explore printing with metal objects on paper and fabric, combining this with tannin rich dye baths (think tea, coffee, tree barks, etc.) that impart permanent color. Students will learn the technique of hand printing on fabric using an all natural printing paste. This workshop will explore creating patterns on both paper and textiles using found rusted objects and then over-dyeing using a tannin bath to create one-of-a-kind designs.  Participants will leave with a foundational knowledge of printing with rust, how to create a tannin-rich bath, and their projects: up to two prints on paper and one organic cotton handkerchief. The registration fee covers all materials including fine watercolor papers, a cotton handkerchief, rusty objects, a tannin bath and disposable latex gloves. Students are encouraged to bring in found, small rusty objects no larger than 2″ in diameter to use in their projects such as dull nails, coins, old keys, etc. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting stained or wet.
