2024 Plein Air Plus

2024 PLEIN AIR PLUS

On view September 7, 2024 – November 2, 2024

Plein Air Plus showcases plein air, the French practice of painting outdoors. This exhibition will present paintings of locations on Long Beach Island (LBI), New Jersey, captured by artists unfamiliar with LBI. Artists will travel to LBI for the exhibition’s Paint Out from July 1 through September 1, 2024. After painting plein air on LBI, artists have the unique opportunity to document their progress and complete their works in their studios to create dynamic compositions.

On September 15 at 2:00 pm, the LBIF will welcome this year’s juror, Leah Triplett Harrington to the gallery, where she will present the talk, Artists as Cultivators: Forays into Curating Contemporary Art.  An artist reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Leah Triplett Harrington is the Director of Exhibitions and Contemporary Curatorial Initiatives at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia.

Previously, she was a curator at Boston’s Now + There, facilitating the Public Art Accelerator and organizing large-scale public art commissions in Boston. Her writing has appeared in ArtAsiaPacific, ArtNet News, Sculpture, Public Art Dialogue, Flash Art, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, and others. She has curated projects for Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston University Art Galleries and Herter Art Gallery, all Massachusetts; and Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn. In 2021, she was the inaugural curatorial mentor for Praise Shadows Art Gallery, Massachusetts. From 2021-2023, she taught at Boston University in the MFA and BFA programs.

Juried by Leah Triplett Harrington, Director of Exhibitions and Contemporary Curatorial Initiatives at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia.

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences is pleased to present the 9th Annual National Juried Competition: Plein Air Plus 2024: Island Life on view from September 7 through November 2, 2024. Plein Air Plus is generously supported by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) and the Ocean County Board of Commissioners.

35 Under 35 Exhibition

35 UNDER 35 EXHIBITION

On view July 2024 – August 2024

The exhibition’s juror is Ruba Katrib, Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at MoMA PS1, New York. To quote Katrib about the jury process for the 35 Under 35 Exhibition, “I am very impressed by the talented pool of artists who submitted their work for this year’s 35 Under 35 program. Spanning painting, sculpture, and other media, the artworks I selected were intriguing and energetic, with the artists often using storytelling devices to put forth their unique perspectives.” Out of 151 submissions, Katrib chose 35 artists and 40 works featuring the new work of these emerging talented artists.

At PS1, Katrib has curated exhibitions such as Rirkrit Tiravanija (2023); Daniel Lind Ramos (2023); Jumana Manna: Break, Take, Erase, Tally (2022); Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: Autonomous Drive (2022); Greater New York (2021); Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life (2021); Simone Fattal’s retrospective in 2019, and solo shows by Edgar Heap of Birds (2019); Karrabing Collective (2019); Fernando Palma Rodrigues, and Julia Phillips (2018).

On July 21 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, the LBIF will welcome Katrib to the gallery, where she will present the talk “Global Women” as it relates to PS1’s programs and current presentations, including the works of Pacita Abad, Yto Barrada, Melissa Cody, and Regina José Galindo.

"Watershed Storytelling"

LBIF highlights a special project organized by two faculty members at Rowan University, Megan Bucknum and Jen Kitson titled, “Watershed Storytelling.” The current Water Stories exhibition at LBIF and this special project links the often-overlooked connections between the Arts and the Sciences. The Water Stories exhibition at the LBIF visually depicts the personal experiences through the eyes of artists. Personal experiences told through storytelling augment how people interact with and form memories that are connected to water.

2023 Works on Paper

2023 WORKS ON PAPER

On view May 20, 2023 – July 4, 2023

Works on Paper is our 25th annual National Juried Competition and Exhibition. Works on Paper will feature eighty artworks created by artists working in all fifty states. Drawing, painting on paper, printmaking, photography, digital prints, mixed media, and paper constructions display the variety of mediums explored in this wide-ranging exhibition of artwork created in the past two years.

Independent curator, Marilyn Symmes has selected 80 works from more than a thousand entries. Ms. Symmes will award three cash prizes and several honorable mentions at the reception. This exhibition offers an art collector a special opportunity to acquire unique contemporary artwork.

The Peggi Einhorn 1st Prize

Peggi Einhorn, a former LBIF Board member, enjoyed a life-long love for creating and studying art.

After a college major in Art History, Peggi first worked in museums (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art,  The Jewish Museum and The National Endowment of the Arts), before embarking on successful careers in banking at J .P. Morgan Chase and in philanthropy as the C.F.O. of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Peggi loved to draw and illustrate almost anything in her line of sight — from candid caricatures of her co-workers, to memorable scenes from far flung vacation spots,  to LBI’s natural beauty. But Peggi’s favorite art form was life drawing — nothing was more interesting to her than capturing the complexity of the human form.   Over the past 20 + years, Peggi enjoyed many of the art classes and exhibitions at LBIF, including participating in a recent LBIF faculty student art exhibition. Having the bay, the ocean and the arts all just a short bike ride from her Harvey Cedars home made LBI her perfect place.

Peggi passed away in February 2023, after a two year battle with brain cancer. Her family has established this annual prize for the Works on Paper exhibition in celebration of Peggi’s creativity, generous spirit and uncommon grace.
